Ethylene glycol, also known as glycol or 1, 2-ethylenediol, is abbreviated as EG. Its chemical formula is (CH20H)2, and it is the simplest diol. Ethylene glycol is a colorless, odorless, sweet-tasting liquid with low toxicity to animals. It is miscible with water and acetone, but has a relatively low solubility in ethers. It is used as a solvent, antifreeze and raw material for synthesizing polyester. It is mainly used in the production of polyester, polyester resin, desiccant, plasticizer, surfactant, synthetic fiber, and is also used as a solvent for dyes, inks, etc., to formulate antifreeze agents for engines, gas dehydrating agents, and to manufacture resins. It can also be used as a wetting agent for cellophane, fibers, leather, and adhesives. It can produce synthetic resin PET, fiber-grade PET, namely polyester fiber, bottles, and sheet-grade PET for dry production of mineral water bottles, etc. It can also be used to produce alkyd resins, glyoxal, etc., and is also used as an antifreeze. In addition to being used as an antifreeze for automobiles, it is also used for transportation in industrial cooling systems, generally referred to as a heat transfer medium. Meanwhile, it can also be used as a condensing agent like water.
