Ethylene glycol, a renowned compound also identified as glycol or 1, 2-ethylenediol, is elegantly abbreviated as EG. With the chemical formula (CH20H)2, it stands as the simplest diol, epitomizing versatility and function. Ethylene glycol is a colorless, odorless liquid with a sweet taste, marked by its low animal toxicity. Exceptionally miscible with water and acetone, it holds a limited solubility in ethers. EG is a formidable solvent, antifreeze, and a crucial raw material in polyester synthesis. Its applications span the production of polyester, polyester resin, desiccants, plasticizers, surfactants, and synthetic fibers. Further, it serves as a solvent for dyes and inks, formulates antifreeze agents for engines, acts as a gas dehydrating agent, and is integral in resin manufacturing. EG also functions as a wetting agent in cellophane, fibers, leather, and adhesives. It fosters the creation of synthetic resin PET, including fiber-grade PET for polyester fibers, bottle-grade PET for mineral water containers, and sheet-grade PET. Moreover, it plays a role in producing alkyd resins, glyoxal, and acts as an antifreeze in automotive and industrial cooling systems, generally known as a heat transfer medium. EG can also be a condensing agent akin to water.
